The Anatomy Of A Modern Revolution? A revolution is a general and fundamental change in the political order when the mass of people rejects its government and the way things are run and is the result of failure to introduce gradual form. The people come together and there is a dramatic violent and forceful movement to change the way society is structured. A revolution itself is successful when one political, social and economic system has been replaced with an alternative that will bring about the necessary changes needed to remove the major sources of discontent and to improve life. The first stage of a revolution is the development of a revolutionary situation. It is characterised by increasingly widespread opposition to the existing government, which has lost effective control of the nation. The people then try to attack their government; this attack sometimes involves strikes, assassinations, demonstrations and riots. The government usually responds to these acts with a refusal to grant reform. From this, the accumulated anger inside the people explodes and the result is the overthrow of the old order. This always involves some form of military action in the capital, including taking over government buildings and occupying key transport and communication centres. There is not always only one group wanting to take power but a number of groups with quite different programs usually emerge. When the new government has taken power, it usually introduces policies that are very different from those of the previous government. People are asked to make sacrifices in order to ensure the changes work out. The relationships between classes and groups in society are affected, and a new group seeking dominance for itself usually pushes down a previously dominant class. However, many problems inherited from the previous government limit the extent of its reform. Next may be the most violent phase of the struggle - the consolidation of power. Loyalty to the new government is usually expected and demanded but allies of the old government may attempt to overthrow the new revolutionary government, to reinstate those who used to enjoy power and privilege and to restore the old order totally. In The Skin Of A Lion Michael Ondaatje Essay
In the novel, In The Skin Of A Lion Michael Ondaatje anatomizes the relationship between power and language and their effect on oneself establishing a sense of identity. The manipulative language and the complex structure Ondaatje uses explores this idea of power and its inevitable relationship with a sense of identity, which is even further accentuated through use of characterization throughout the novel. Ondaatje shines light on the unheard corners of history to give the disenfranchised migrants a sense of power, which in turn provides them with an enriched sense of self. This is represented in the novel through the migrant workers. Ondaatje expresses this through harsh sensory imagery when describing them, by saying, ââ¬Å"The smell of tar seeps up through the porous body of their clothes. The black of it permanent under their finger nailâ⬠This sensory imagery and hyperbole, ââ¬Å"permanent under their finger nails,â⬠allows the reader to empathise with the workers and therefore relate to the harsh conditions in the workplace. In this quote Ondaatje describes the workers through use of impersonal pronouns, ââ¬Å"theirâ⬠, thus taking away their sense of personal identity. The migrant workers not being allowed to keep their own name further depict lack of identity, seen in quote, ââ¬Å"The labour agent giving them all English Names. Charlie Johnson. Nick Parker.â⬠Enabling the reader to understand the complex effect a personââ¬â¢s identity has when establishing power. Language displays and intricate relationship with power and acquisition of a personal identity. The migrant workers are forced to communicate in English, a language they are not conversant in. ââ¬Å"If they speak in any language other than English, they will be jailed. A rule of the city.â⬠Thus the migrant workers are disempowered thus depriving them of their cultural identity and preventing them from uniting to become a powerful body. Ambrose, on the other hand, is a Canadian that has complete grasp on the English language. He is immediately portrayed as ââ¬Ëa Jackel, a buying up every field of wealthââ¬â¢ thus representing the gap between the rich and the poor, the native and the foreign and the sense of power that is established through language. The notion of power, and its liaison with identity, is further develop through characterization. Nicholas Temelcoff is a character that shows immense power through his actions, Ondaatje describes him as ââ¬Å"solitaryâ⬠¦He is burly on the ground and then falls with terrific speed, grace, using the wind to push himselfâ⬠¦He is a spinner. He links everyoneâ⬠This description represents Temelcoffs power through his skill and mastery of his trade. Although he may be uneducated, he remains a figure of supreme skill and grace when he is on the bridge. It portrays Temelcoffs heroic nature, which is also an allusion to the ââ¬ËEpic of Gilgameshââ¬â¢ in which the title is derived from. The use of repetition on ââ¬Å"he isâ⬠shows Temelcoffââ¬â¢s masculinity and when intermingled with Ondaatjeââ¬â¢s poetic prose he is portrayed as a powerful hero of the story. The audience immediately perceives Temelcoff as a hero and thus sympathizes with him and his plight. There are also distinct parallels between these characters and the Epic of Gilgamesh as the novel follows pattern of Legend, also seen in Christopher Voglerââ¬â¢s writing. Their cyclical nature is further accentuated, as certain lines out of Skin of a Lion are the same from Gilgamesh ââ¬Å"these are the days that belong to the moonâ⬠. Thus, Ondaatje characterizes Temelcoff to glorify him and the workers, which in turn results in them being given prominence in the novel. This reveals that Temelcoffââ¬â¢s strong sense of identity, which he has established through his trade, has been crucial for his powerful status in the novel. The nonlinear plot structure that Ondaatje uses, portrays Patrick as having more power as the novel progresses, this enables him to establish a stronger sense of identity. In the chapter of ââ¬Ëthe searcherââ¬â¢ it is evident that Patrick is confused with his identity. Represented in the constant shifts in perspective and also the confusion Patrick shows in his life. When in his apartment, Patrick is described as walking, ââ¬Å"Into the empty rooms, gesturing towards the broken things he was trying to assemble, broken glass and crockery.â⬠Ondaatje uses the state of his apartment as a metaphor to describe the chaotic and disarrayed identity of Patrick, which is powerless and confused about who he truly is. An example of self-reflexivity in the novel is when Alice says to Patrick, ââ¬Å"you reach people through metaphors,â⬠this reflects that Ondaatje intentionally uses these metaphors to develop the story and create textual integrity. The fragmented state of Patrick in ââ¬Ëthe searcherââ¬â¢ is contrasted in the chapter ââ¬ËMaritime theatreââ¬â¢ where the writing structure is much more linear. This structure reflects that he has found a purpose and knows his objectives, subsequently leading to a heightened sense of identity; Ondaatje also uses the symbol of dynamite to show the power now has over Harris. When Harris asks Patrick, ââ¬Å"What do you want? Who are you? Patrick replies, ââ¬Å"I am Patrick Lewis.â⬠This expresses the sense of identity Patrick has finally gained throughout the novel finally being able to answer the question of who he really was.

Research in Motion Maker of the Blackberry almost Obsolete free essay sample
Research in Motion (RIM), maker of the Blackberry, went from being the new of the tech industry for its innovative phones to a company that is almost obsolete. I decided to used this as an example for this weeks discussion since the company is a Canadian company and the head office is only located an hour away from where I live. The company started in a small town of Waterloo, Canada about an hour away from the city of Toronto. Its founder, Mike Lizards, graduated with a technical degree from the local University of Waterloo, which today is the top computer science university in all of Canada. He started the company 20 years ago. During the start up period, he brought in another Canadian, Jim Bilabials to help him run the business side of the operation. Many of you would remember the status symbols proudly carried by world leaders, executives and celebrities. Sad to say, Research in Motion has lost a significant amount of market share and the stock price has also plummeted. In fact, there have been rumors that the company is seeking buyers. What happened? Based on the concepts presented in this weeks reading, the primary cause for RIMs downfall was system failure. Whether you are still a BlackBerry loyalist or have moved on to something else, I hope we can all learn meeting from this painful failure. Concepts for this weeks reading I RIMs system failure I By the time a problem becomes apparent it may be unnecessarily difficult to solve. (Meadows, 2008, p. 3) I BlackBerry went from being the phone everyone loved and wanted to the phone everyone loved to hate. When the BlackBerry became more sophisticated, there is also the infuriating hour glass icon which popped up too often. Users got into the habit of popping off the battery and restoring their crashing BlackBerry to life. This restarting process seems to take an eternity. They also ignore the phone until it was too late. They ignored the competitors and took a wait and see approach. By this time, it was difficult for RIM to fix the problem or catch up to its competitors. I A diverse system with multiple pathways and redundancies is more stable and less vulnerable to external shock than a uniform system with little diversity (Meadows, 2008, p. P. 3-4) | The BlackBerry is predominantly a device for the office for North America. The company failed to actively win consumers overseas or to non business consumers. There were no China business strategies. In contrast, 10% of Apples revenue came from mainland China and is expected to grow. Ignoring emerging markets was a failure on RIMs business strategy. In addition, the company only really had one very successful product which was the BlackBerry phone. The tablet was a flop and failed miserably. A company cant survive on one product. I Doing something that has always worked and suddenly discovered that currently action/strategy no longer works. (Meadows, 2008, p. 5) | Mike Lizards and Jim Bilabials were very experienced running a start- up with the mentality the we are in this together. However, when the company grew to 20,000 employees, the strategy must also change since the system is now much more complex to manage. Two areas that did not change were empowering decision making and increasing start accountability But tee organizations encourage growth of their people in this manner which results in vast untapped resources so people will lose their commitment and the sense of mission with little of their energy and almost none of their spirit (Sense, 2006, P. 7) I The closed culture where what Mike and Jim thinks matters resulted in little innovation since the invention of the BlackBerry. Larry Console, the SCOFF from 2001 to 2009 brought in new operational staff members before his retirement but never fully empowered them to do their Jobs. After the SCOFF left, Lizards started holding regular meetings with senior operations staff who previously reported to Console. Lizards set overly aggressive deadlines, announced launched dates publicly but the company was not able the meet them. No one had the breadth of experience to challenge or disagree with Lizards. Internal deadlines werent taken seriously and gaining consensus was difficult. As a result, innovation was at a snail pace. They also failed to develop strong leaders that can bring a refreshing perspective to the company or product. I Great organizations are fleeing, enjoying their moment in the sun, then passing Tuttle back to the ranks of the mediocre. (Sense, 2006, p. 11) | RIM is a perfect example of a company which experienced great success. It was a global powerhouse that delivered mobile e-mail to the masses and sparking a revolution in mobile communication. However, by the late 2009, it was clear that the phone and Android had redefined the semaphore arena and RIM needed to adapt. The company had to target consumers more aggressively, not Just business customers. The company needed to have more applications; it needed to be less about communication but more about consuming media. Unfortunately, it is a little too late for RIM and it will to able to maintain even its mediocre status (that is my personal opinion! ). Their refusal to look at Apple and Android as competition is likely the one biggest mistake they made. I Todays problems come from yesterdays solutions (Sense, 2006, p. 59) | Those who owned or still have a BlackBerry can vouch the usefulness of the device. BlackBerry 7 operating system did bring huge improvements to the web browser but as website design became more complex, it also became inadequate in recent years. I If the leaders at RIM look back at some of the system issues mentioned above and acted on them, the company may be in a better position today. Current business environment is intense, complex and very competitive. Any company along with its subsystems working in isolation will not survive and sustain themselves in this complex world.
